I tried 30gigs and I can tell you, Allen is just making it look *GOOD*.
This is just a small post to let you all know I’ve cleaned up my Blogroll (removed a few dead ones and added a few fresh ones) and I’ve also refreshed the Firefox pages (Extensions, Search plugins, Themes…)
Thanks for reading, stay tuned
Gadgets.co.uk now sells the Revenge CD (with earplugs), which you can use to get revenge against your noisy neighbours.
Gizmodo.com writes:
A buddy of mine just mentioned a problem he was having in his apartment. Every night, at about 2 or 3am, some putz wakes up and plays the same song over and over again on the piano or, it seems, to a recording of a piano. If you live in Columbus, Ohio and you are trying out for American Idol “next year, definitely,” then cut it out.
Otherwise, he could probably use this disk which contains, but is not limited to, the sound of:
A screaming baby.
A rooster.
A big party.
Bowling.
Funreports.com says:
A curious item is available on the Internet. It is a CD for taking revenge on neighbors for loud music, screaming or any other noise-making effects, especially at night.
The CD, which includes 20 tracks, costs about $20. Earplugs included. Gadgets.co.uk, where the Revenge CD is being sold, says that the earplugs are needed “for your sanity and protection.” The advertisement on the website offers to buy the CD and reap sweet revenge. It is enough to play one of the sound effect tracks and stop up your ears (or go out for half an hour). Results will follow shortly.

As I already wrote, I’m trying to force Firefox to treat PDFs as any other binary file, because the Firefox-Adobe integration doesn’t work for me the way I’d like it to work.
I’ve posted a solution that, turns out, was only a temporary fix. The stupid behaviour is back, and I can’t find any more switches to toggle. But don’t despair, I’ve found The Ultimate Solution.
It’s called ‘PDF Download‘, and it’s an extension for Firefox. That’s right, an extension. And what does it do? It catches all clicks to PDF files and then offers you 4 choices:
1) Save to disk
2) Open in new tab (standard firefox behaviour, only in a new tab)
3) View as HTML — this is a kickass option for textual PDFs, because it’s amazingly fast
4) Cancel (eat the click and don’t do anything)
Let me tell you right now. This extension is A M A Z I N G. It works exactly as advertised, and it does a hell of a job. It’s become one of my favorite firefox extensions in less than one day.
That’s enough out of me. Head out to rabotat.org to install it.
Up to today, I couldn’t get the whole ‘greasemonkey hype’… I just couldn’t see what was so good about a couple of hacks, most of which were available as extensions before GM showed up.
Today, I have seen the light. Toying around with a fresh installation of Firefox, I wasn’t afraid of losing my entire firefox profile, so I decided to install GM and give it a try..
I installed a ton of user scripts, some of which I found nice, some totally useless..
But… I found one that totally rocks. I got the Disable Targets For Downloads from rhyley.org user script and modified it so it fixes the gmail attachment download link, makes it not open a new window (tab). I think it’s totally useless to open a new tab which won’t ever show a page, but will just open a download dialog (or whatever the web browser is configured to do with a new download.
If you’re the do-it-yourself type, install the script I mentioned above and then modify the 25th line of the code to read:
if ((l[i].href.indexOf("."+d[k])!=-1) || (l[i].href.indexOf("view=att&disp=attd")!=-1)) {
that should do it.
If JavaScript frightens you, you can just download my version directly. It’s only modification is the specified line and the comments to reflect what I’ve done with it. Here it is.
While surfing around, killing some time, I ran across the mod_rewrite anti leech script creator by isnoop.com. It’s a great aproach to preventing image leeching from other sites. The only prerequisite is that you’re running mod_rewrite on your Apache web Server.
[Update: this method is obsolete, check out my new post, titled ‘Screw you, Adobe!‘ for a better solution]
I don’t know about you, but my Firefox goes berserk when I try to close (that’s right, not open, but close) the tab that is being used to display a PDF file through the default PDF plugin. It gobbles up 100% of my CPU and takes ages to close (and I’m talking minutes here… close to 10 minutes at some times)… This often drives me nuts, so I put it out of it’s misery by killing the process in the task manager… The downside is - I’ve lost all my open tabs, and I don’t have photographic memory.
I now unleash upon the world the news that I have found a fix to this agonizing problem, once and for all… I was foolish to think the problems could be solved in Firefox.. After careful examination of the problem at hand (aka after 30 minutes of googling), I found a hint that the path to heaven was hidden in the devil’s own - Adobe Acrobat.
Save your souls, reclaim the web and show that nasty Adobe just who runs the show around here. Follow these simple steps:
1) Open up Adobe Reader (the product formerly known as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Reader). I’m using version 6, so these instructions are based on it.
2) Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences.
3) Choose the Internet section and uncheck ‘Display PDF in browser’. I also unchecked the second option, ‘Check browser settings…’, but I have no idea if that makes any difference.
4) Click OK
5) Close Adobe Reader
6) Close Firefox (if open)
7) That’s all, folks!
Following these simple steps cured PDFitis and my Firefox is now breathing normally. When I click a link that points to a PDF file, I get the standard download file dialog. Whoopie!
I really enjoyed this movie… I can’t say it was a good movie, because it wasn’t. It was just another zero-brain-activity romantic comedy that hits the spot just right.
There isn’t much to say about it. Will Smith kicks ass in the part of Hitch, the successful matchmaker that doesn’t believe in love, and Eva Mendes steals the screen as Sara, his not-meant-to-be-girlfriend.
If you’re into movies like ‘Along came Polly‘ and such, this one is definitely worth checking out. Don’t expect to have much to talk to your friends about it, though.
I don’t know where to start with this one… Holy shit what a pile of crap. I guess that’ll be good enough for an intro.
I cannot tell you how unimpressed I was with this movie. A bowl of cherries I ate during the movie impressed me a whole lot more. Literally.
The movie was advertised (once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away
) as the movie that would explain how the original Cube (a very good movie) came to be, why the Hypercube (a not so good movie) sucked so bad I was sorry I paid to see it and a lot of other stuff… Instead, we got a few minor, not at all amusing characters filling the gaps where the writers could not be bothered with irrelevant things like STORY and PLOT.
If anyone gets me to watch this EVER again, I will be very much suprised. Very much.
If you’ve seen Cube and enjoyed it — avoid this movie at all costs
If you’ve seen Hypercube and enjoyed it — this one’s right up your alley
If you haven’t seen either Cube movie, you might enjoy this… If you do, do yourself a favour and DON’T go see the other two
